Mixed Media Madness/Bookmaking 5-day Summer Camp

Are you a "jack of all trades" when it comes to art? If you like to paint, draw, collage, print, sew, and build, then join our bookmakers’ laboratory! First, we’ll explore and experiment with a variety of fun art techniques on paper. We'll also play with printing techniques to create your own amazing textures and beautiful one-of-a kind prints. Then, we’ll assemble our painted papers and prints into books. You'll learn saddle binding, Japanese stab binding, concertina and perfect binding, tunnel books and more. Take home several unique, expressive, and functional books that are artworks on their own, and can be used for journaling, writing stories, scrap-booking, or whatever you can dream up! If time permits, you can start filling a book with poems, original stories and illustrations, or your own art. This exciting week will be a variety-lover's dream, and a book lover’s paradise.

Japanese Bookbinding: Fundamentals & Beyond

A one day workshop.
Location: Artists' Mediums, Williston VT.

Japanese bookbinding is an ancient art that has experienced a recent surge in popularity among book and paper artists and crafters. In this class you’ll learn a little bit of history and context of the Japanese book binding tradition and where it fits in the context of bookbinding worldwide. We’ll practice multiple binding patterns and variations on each, beginning with basic “yamato toji” and “yotsumi toji” (2 and 4 hole bindings) and moving through more complex “kikko toji” (tortoise shell), “Asa-no-ha-toji” (hemp leaf) patterns. You’ll have time to explore and create in a relaxed environment and take home several unique, expressive, and functional books that can be used for journaling, writing, scrapbooking. You’ll also receive handouts with the techniques & materials we covered, plus a list of resources for further exploration and inspiration. Whether you’re a curious beginner or have some experience with book arts, you’ll find this class inspirational and informative. This is a fantastic way for couples, or parents and teens to spend an afternoon together.
